Thoughts on teaching:
I subscribe to the wisdom of John Biggs, who writes that “meaning is not something imparted or transmitted from teacher to learner, but something learners have to create for themselves. Teaching is simply a catalyst for learning.” As a scientist, I love the idea that my teaching, at its best, lowers the activation energy needed for students to learn and thereby helps to catalyze their ownership of new knowledge and skills.
Field(s) of expertise/interest:
I study viruses that replicate in bacteria (called bacteriophage, or phages), with an eye to their potential biomedical applications.
Hobbies/interests:
Sitting on beaches, hiking or biking on trails, climbing on rocks (mostly in the gym, sometimes outside), and playing old-time fiddle music with friends
